Bay Island Driftwood Museum in Kerala

Driftwood Museum in Kumarakom is  a museum to display  a very unique collection of drift wood scultures which are of superior quality and artistic value. This driftwood museum is known as Bay Island driftwood museum and is located in one of the villages in the area Kumarakom. You can find a very huge collection of  various shapes and designs of root sculptures. This bay island museum was established in the year 2001 and is the only one such museum inthe whole of India. Now raji Punnoose is the curator and the proprietor of the museum.

Raji Punnoose, who was a school teacher then at the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago , used to pick up pieces of driftwood deposited at the sea shores by the waves of the sea. Most of them were twisted tree trunks, stumps and roots etc . She found that with little hardwork she could change and transform them into scultptures.  Thanks to the area she was in and the turbulent weather of the Bay of Bengal with its cyclones  and storms brought many such things back to the shore.

Some of these pieces were centuries old and had become resilient having drifted across the seas for a long time. What was left of these woods were the sturdiest parts which were cleansed, the dead parts of the wood were removed, scraped and trimmed  to bring the wood to the shape of the sculpture which she had in mind. many of them got shaped as she liked them to be and they closely resembled reptiles, animals, birds and fishes.

Now there are many who like to visit this driftwood museum as they find the exhibits educative and interesting  as well as inculcatesthe qualities of imagination , creativity, originality and an intiative to produce usefiul articles from the waste materials thrown away and seen to be of no use. This driftwood museum encourages one to use imagination and the creativity inside everyone of us  to do and show more and more.

No Entrance  fee is collected. The Museum is closed on Mondays and all the other days are working days.

At preset the Ahmadnagar fort is under the administration of the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army.

History of the Ahmad Nagar Fort
The Fort was built by Malik Shah Ahmed in 1427 who was the first sultan of the Nizam Shahi Dynasty. In the initial stages the board was made of mud  but in 1559 fortication began during the rule of Hussain Nizam Shah. The fortification went on for 4 years  and was finished in 1562. Palitana, the Jain Pilgrimage centre

Palitana is a Jain pilgrimage town atop the Shatrunjay hills in Bhavnagar district of the state of Gujarat in India. There are two peaks of hills covered with temples about 900 in number, big and small at Palitana.

Adinath of the Ikshvagu dynasty of Ayodhya used to visit this area many times. Later he came and meditated here on the Shatrunjay hill. He was the first Thirthangara and the main temple at the top of the hill is dedicated to him. Altogether there are more than 3000 temples in these hills and all are exquisitely carved in marbles.

There is a cluster of Jain temples on the Shatrunjay hill. These temples have been built in a period of 900 years by various Jains, that is from 11th century onwards. There are about 3,800 stone steps cut to facilitate climbing to the top of the hill from the ground.

The Jains have strict code for climbing these hills as they believe that the whole hill from the top to the bottom is sacred. They cannot eat anything while climbing the hills. They have to start descending the steps before evening as no one can stay the night in the sacred mountain.

There is a muslim shrine of Angan Pir, at the top of the hill. Childless couple visit the temple to offer miniature cradles to the Pir and seek the Pir's blessings to be blessed with children

How to reach Palitana
Palitana is located at about 50 kilometers from Bhavnagarin the state of Gujarat India.
Bhavnagar airport is the nearest one to go to Palitana and is about 36 kilometers away.

If you are travelling by rail Palitana has a small railway station and is about 5 kilometers from the hills of Palitana. This is connected to Bhavnagar and Songadh.

As for the bus services there are regular buses plying from Bhavnagar and the other neighbouring towns of Ahmedabad, Talaja, Una, and Diu.
